Without question, Twitter has convinced many of the biggest names in TV that it is a worthy partner, but none of the deals its struck are likely to last very long if it cant deliver results. To be sure, part of that responsibility will lie with the networks themselves -- if they dont produce compelling videos to add to their tweets, users wont engage. But its also up to Twitter both to keep its audience growing, thereby ensuring more potential viewers for TV networks, and limiting churn.

The idea, said Way, is that Comcast, and likely other Twitter TV partners, want to use Twitter, in the short term at least, to promote their programs. If thats successful, she suggested, advertising will be a lucrative result. Its a bit of, show if it works first, Way said, then worry about advertising.

Daniel TerdimanDaniel Terdiman is a senior writer at CNET News covering Twitter, Net culture, and everything in between.

That is surely one of the key drivers behind Twitters recent spate of partnerships with TV networks and other providers of compelling video. Already, the company has inked pacts to embed tweets with video from A-list partners like the NFL, ESPN, CNET parent CBS, and the NBA. And Wednesday, it announced perhaps the most ambitious TV gambit yet, a deal that lets Twitter serve as a front end for a wide variety of Comcasts programming.

99 total points.1,039 total yards.1 incredible finish.Broncos. Cowboys. HIGHLIGHTS -

That makes sense. Though financial terms of Twitter TV partnerships arent known, its probable that the clips being embedded by the various networks may very well be acceptable loss leaders in the short term. If its proven that theres a high level of engagement with the clips, and that Twitter users are responding to the advertising that comes with them, then the win for the networks would be compounded. But those networks surely make r more money from advertising on TV than they everSocial Media Can TV deals be winners for Twitter networks watchers? would through Twitter, so their interest is in sure people watch their shows.

Using the new See It tool, Comcast subscribers will be able to watch their shows more easily via Twitter. But theyll still be watching only after paying for a TV subscription.

Users of Twitter and Comcasts new See It feature will be able to watch Comcast-owned TV clips and shows via Twitter.

A new rumor and details point to the Nexus watch potentially coming this year. The HTC One Max is officially here and our Hot List for the top Android phones.

NFL (nfl) October 7, 2013

Those are healthy numbers, though its impossible to know how many views the video -- which included a short advertisement -- actually got. But several other NFL tweets with embedded videos over the last few days generated r less engagement, with retweets in the low three digits and vorites sometimes below 100.

As Twitter edges closer to its IPO, the pressure is on not just to maximize revenue Social Media, but to demonstrate that it still has a lot of growth potential.

Theres no doubt that Twitter is already home to much of the so-called second screen conversation about TV shows. The platform is ideal for people to share their thoughts about what theyre watching, and to interact with others, even sometimes the stars of the shows themselves. And thanks to searchable hashtags and promoted tweets, new york asian escort model TV networks can already place ads directly into the middle of those conversations.

Still, given that so many top networks have already signed on, will others feel the pressure to join them? Blau said it all depends on how well Twitters existing partnerships do. I think the answer lies in the effectiveness of this, Blau said. There may be a collective holding of the breath, [and network executives] saying hmm.

Still, the NFL believes in Twitter enough to have made it its first social network partner. [Twitter] came with a much more robust appreciation for what their distribution could mean for content owners like ourselves, Hans Schroeder, senior vice president of media strategy and development for the NFL, recently told CNET. For us, one of the real attractive things about this partnership ... is the ability to take our content and use their ability to promote within their distribution network, and make sure a number much larger than 5 million people see this content and become more aware of the conversation around the NFL that happens today.

This could be considered a make or break proposition for Twitter. The company is hoping to raise $1 billion with its IPO, despite the ct that it has never made a dime of profit. In ct, its S-1 filing revealed that it had lost $69 million in the first half of 2013, up from $49 million in losses a year earlier. Clearly, the company has no choice but to do whatever it can to boost revenues. And partnering with networks that have huge, passionate followings and proven revenue potential is as good a bet as any.

But Twitters TV partnerships raise two essential and related questions that no one outside Twitter and its partners yet know the answer to. First, do Twitter users really want to use the service to watch TV? And second, what do Twitters TV partners hope to get out of these deals?

Each one brings unique strengths to the, uh, carpet. Check out CNETs buying recommendations for anyone out there on the hunt for a new, luxury vacuum..

Twitters TV partners, then, may well find themselves wondering whether the medium will work for them the same way. I think its definitely a strong and important move on Comcasts part as a programmer in promoting NBCUniversals programs, Heather Way, a senior analyst at Park Associates, said of the Twitter-Comcast deal. But its more about promotion of programs...than about advertising.

With Comcast as its latest partner, Twitter shows it is doubling down on its TV partnership strategy. But do Twitter users want to watch TV clips, and can the deals meet the networks goals?

Its probably too soon for a definitive answer to whether people will watch these kinds of clips. A quick perusal of videos provided by the NFL suggests that there is some hunger for them, but not necessarily the kind that advertisers would salivate over. A video recap of the Denver Broncos victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday -- a tense, hard-fought game between two very popular teams that drew a TV audience of 28.3 million viewers -- garnered 647 retweets and 300 vorites.

At the heart of the Comcast deal is a new system called See It that will let Comcast subscribers watch and record shows from that companys slew of networks, including NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, Bravo, and more. Among the first shows to be part of the arrangement are The Voice and Sunday Night Football.

What Twitter is hoping for with its TV partnerships, suggested Brian Blau, a Gartner analyst, is to accelerate the second screen TV conversations already happening on the social network and inspire more engagement with its partners content.

Even the Comcast deal is about that. See It is a yet powerful feature that creates an instant, online remote control, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said in a statement about the partnership with Twitter. Comcast is taking a leap forward in social TV by enabling Twitter users to more easily find and view the shows they want to watch and discover new shows.

You can read the report in its entirety -- including the various responses from the Obama administration -- here.

Downie says theres no evidence the Obama administration is tapping NSA tools like Prism in its efforts to track and prosecute leakers but that the tools are nevertheless a threat to the press role as a watchdog over government:

Each one brings unique strengths to the, uh, carpet. Check out CNETs buying recommendations for anyone out there on the hunt for a new, luxury vacuum..

The Obama Administration and the Press, penned by Leonard Downie Jr., whose career at the storied news included time spent as an editor during the Watergate era, says sources for stories involving national security are r less likely to talk to reporters now that mass spying by the NSA has come to light.

And Downie taps Harvard Law professor and former Bush administration lawyer Jack Goldsmith for some perspective. Theres no perfect solution to this problem, Goldsmith says. Too much secrecy and too much leaking are both bad. A leaker has to be prepared to subject himself to the penalties of law, but leaks can serve a really important role in helping correct government malfeasance, to encourage government to be careful about what it does in secret, and to preserve democratic processes.

Snowden had pretty much vanished since being granted temporary asylum by Russian President Valdimir Putin this summer.

Edward MoyerEdward Moyer is an associate editor at CNET News and a many-year veteran of the writing and editing world. He enjoys taking sentences apart and putting them back together. He also likes them from scratch.

Another of the group, former CIA officer turned activist Ray McGovern, said, according to The Wall Street Journal, that Snowden has made his peace with what he did. Hes convinced that what he did was right. He has no regrets and he is ready to ce whatever the future holds for him.

I think we have a real problem. Most people are deterred by those leaks prosecutions. Theyre scared to death. Theres a gray zone between classified and unclassified information, and most sources were in that gray zone. Sources are now afraid to enter that gray zone. Its having a deterrent effect. If we consider aggressive press coverage of government activities being at the core of American democracy, this tips the balance heavily in vor of government.

Snowdens ther also landed in Russia on Thursday and will presumably be secreted away to a visit with his son.

The National Security Agencys electronic surveillance programs are already having a chilling effect on free speech, at least according to a report by the former executive editor of The Washington Post.

Potential insider sources think [the government is] looking at reporters records, Priest said. Im writing fewer things in e-mail. Im even afraid to tell officials what I want to talk about because its all going into one giant computer.

In regard to leakers/whistle-blowers, The New York Times Scott Shane is quoted as saying:

Except, that is, for the occasional run to the grocery store for a shopping cart full of secrets. (Note: The Christian Science Monitor reports that Snowdens lawyer says, yes, that is indeed Snowden on a supermarket run, though probably not in Moscow.)

Those honoring Snowden were members of the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence, a group of former national security officials, says The Washington Post.

Snowden feted in Russia

Edward Snowden receives the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence Award in Moscow. From left to FBI whistle-blower Coleen Rowley, NSA whistle-blower Thomas Drake, Justice Department whistle-blower Jesselyn Raddack, Snowden, UK WikiLeaks activist Sarah Harrison, and former CIA official turned activist Ray McGovern.

Its not just the NSA. Downies report explores the Obama administrations attitude toward the control of information and the censuring of leakers -- the most aggressive Ive seen since the Nixon administration, he says.

Downie also quotes the Posts Dana Priest, whose 2011 book Top Secret America: The Rise of the New American Security State looked at the huge and secretive national security apparatus assembled after the September 11,new york asian escort model 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Meanwhile, Prism leaker Edward Snowden was visited in Russia by four US whistle-blowing advocates, who gave him an award for his efforts and said he looked great and was remarkably centered.

The report also discusses the Obama administrations unprecedented use of social media and the Web. What some might characterize as an effort toward transparency and direct contact with the public is called into question as something more akin to propaganda and, as former CNN Washington Bureau Chief Frank Sesno puts it, an attempt to end run the news media completely.

In Paris this past July, demonstrators hold up posters of US President Barack Obama and NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

At this writing, no connection has been established between the NSA surveillance programs and the many leak investigations being conducted by the Obama administration -- but the surveillance has added to the fearful atmosphere surrounding American journalists and government sources.

I have no idea what [my sons] intentions are, but ever since he has been in Russia, my understanding is that he has simply been trying to remain healthy and safe and he has nothing to do with future stories, Lon Snowden was quoted as saying in The Christian Monitor.

They included Thomas Drake, a former NSA employee who leaked documents about spending and mismanagement issues at the NSA to a Baltimore Sun reporter, and was subjected to a prosecution that a federal judge later called four years of hell. (Drake figures in the above mentioned report by the Committee to Protect Journalists.)

Downie says that in its defense, the administration points, in part, to presidential directives to put more government data online, to speed up processing of Freedom of Information Act requests, and to limit the amount of government information classified as secret. The administration also cites the declassification and public release of information about NSA communications surObama NSA dissed by report as Edward Snowden reappearsveillance programs in the wake of Snowdens leak, Downie notes.

There is greater concern that their communications are being monitored -- office phones, e-mail systems, Post reporter [Rajiv] Chandrasekaran said. I have to resort to personal e-mail or ce to ce, even for things I would consider routine.

I am not sure my son will be returning to the US again. Thats his decision, he is an adult, he is a person who is responsible for his own agency. I am his ther, I love my son, and I certainly hope I will have an opportunity to see my son, the elder Snowden said.

Downie -- also an executive with the Committee to Protect Journalists, the press-freedom nonprofit that published the report Thursday -- examined the Obama administrations aggressive policies toward leakers such as Edward Snowden and spoke with 30 experienced Washington journalists about the administrations dealings with the press. The journalists included reporters from ABC, the Associated Press, CBS (parent of CNET), CNN,Social Media The New York Times, and the Post.

NSA surveillance and Obama administration policies are putting a damper on freedom of the press, says a report. Meanwhile, Prism leaker Edward Snowden accepts an award in Moscow.

The NSAs program comes to light amid scrutiny of the methods used by the US intelligence and law enforcement community, which, critics say, has run roughshod over privacy rights and the Constitution in the name of national security.

During a single day last year, the NSAs Special Source Operations branch collected 444,743 e-mail address books from Yahoo, 105,068 from Hotmail, 82,857 from Facebook, 33,697 from Gmail and 22,881 from unspecified other providers, according to an internal NSA PowerPoint presentation. Those figures, described as a typical daily intake in the document, correspond to a rate of more than 250 million per year.

A new rumor and details point to the Nexus watch potentially coming this year. The HTC One Max is officially here and our Hot List for the top Android phones.

The National Security Agency is collecting hundreds of millions of contact lists from e-mail and instant message accounts from around the world, according to a Washington Post report.

Yahoo issued a similar statement, saying, We are not aware of nor have we participated in the alleged mass collection of user data by the government.

In August, encrypted e-mail service Lavabit suddenly closed up after the FBI obtained a search warrant demanding that it turn over the keys to its data encryption to further the agencys effort to trace a single Lavabit user. Lavabit, which uses encryption to prevent messages from being read by anyone other than the sender or recipient, was the service Snowden allegedly used to send a message to a Human Rights Watch representative in July.

The collection, which occurs overseas, hinges on arrangements with telecommunications companies and foreign intelligence agencies with access to cilities that route data on the Internets main lines Web, the Post said. The agency is not authorized to collect the information from cilities in the United States, but US intelligence officials told the Post that contact lists for Americans are often harvested in the sweep.

CNET reported in July that the US government has attempted to obtain the master encryption keys that Internet companies use to shield millions of users private Web communications from eavesdropping. However, a source said that large Internet companies have resisted the requests on the grounds that they go beyond what the law permits,

We have neither knowledge nor participation in this mass collection of Web mail addresses or chat lists by the government, a Google spokesperson told CNET in a statement.

The collection, new york escort which was revealed in documents supplied by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, occurs when Internet services transmit the data, typically when users log in, compose a message, or sync devices, the Post reported Monday. The agency is said to analyze that data to identify hidden connections among foreign intelligence targets.

Updated at 6:30 p.m. PT with statements from Microsoft, Facebook, and Yahoo.

Collection occurs when Internet services transmit the data during routine activity such as composing a message, The Washington Post reports.

The agency collects an estimated 500,000 buddy lists on chat services and Web-based e-mail every day, according to an internal NSA PowerPoint presentation reviewed by the Post.

A Yahoo spokesperson told the Post that it would begin using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to encrypt e-mail connections. Google has always offered Gmail users the ability to use HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) and made it the deult setting in 2010.

As we have said many times, we believe that while governments have an important responsibility to keep people safe, it is possible to do so while also being transparent, a Facebook representative said. We strongly encourage all governments to provide greater transparency about their efforts aimed at keeping the public safe, and we will continue to be aggressive advocates for greater disclosure.

The NSA said the data it collects is used to combat terrorism and an array of other crimes.

The National Security Agency is focused on discovering and developing intelligence about valid foreign intelligence targets like terrorists, human traffickers, and drug smugglers, the agency said in a statement. We are not interested in personal information about ordinary Americans. Moreover, we operate in accordance with rules approved by either the Attorney General or the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, as appropriate, designed to minimize the acquisition, use, and dissemination of any such information.

Delivering a blow to the Nasdaq, which was accused of bungling Facebooks IPO, Twitter takes another route for its market debut.

Dara KerrDara Kerr, a freelance journalist based in the Bay Area Social Networking, is scinated by robots, supercomputers and Internet memes. When not writing about technology and modernity, she likes to travel to r-off countries.

Facebook is listed on the Nasdaq but it hasnt had a great experience with the exchange. In ct, on the first day of trading, technical glitches delayed the opening of shares causing an estimated $500 million in losses. The botched IPO also resulted in the Nasdaq having to pay $10 million to the US Securities and Exchange Commission to settle charges related to the errors.

Twitter earlier this month anSocial Networking Twitter picks NYSE over Nasdaq for IPOnounced its plans to go public and goal to raise $1 billion. Its IPO date could be as soon as November 15 and the social network will reportedly use the ticker symbol TWTR.

While this doesnt make much of a difference to investors, it does deliver a blow to the Nasdaq, which is the home to most public tech companies, like Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Facebook.

Both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq have been courting Twitter to list the companys shares once it goes public. And it appears the social network has chosen a victor: the NYSE. The news comes via Twitters updated S-1 filing on Tuesday.

CNET contacted Twitter for comment. Well update the story when we get more information.

A new rumor and details point to the Nexus watch potentially coming this year. The HTC One Max is officially here and our Hot List for the top Android phones.

Each one brings unique strengths to the, uh, carpet. Check out CNETs buying recommendations for anyone out there on the hunt for a new, luxury vacuum..

An older version of Twitters home page emphasized following your interests.

Facebook disabled Instagrams photo integration with Twitter such that Instagram photos are no longer viewable within tweets and users are now redirected to Instagram to view Instagram photos through a link within a tweet. As a result, our users may be less likely to click on links to Instagram photos in tweets, and Instagram users may be less likely to tweet or remain active users of Twitter. Any similar elimination of integration with Twitter in the future, whether by Facebook or others, may adversely impact our business and operating results.

Twitter and Instagram dont play nice for that very reason. In ct, they dont play at all. Lets let Twitters S-1 explain:

A new rumor and details point to the Nexus watch potentially coming this year. The HTC One Max is officially here and our Hot List for the top Android phones.

Twitters monthly active users.

Heres how Twitter would like you to interpret that statement: The most important people in the world prefer Twitter. It has plenty of proof to back up that claim. You heard it first on Twitter, from the Iranian President himself no less, that Hassan Rouhani and President Barack Obama spoke on the phone in a historic call in late September, for instance.

To the casual observer, Twitter and Instagram appear to be worlds apart. One is for following whats happening right now. The other is for sharing pictures. But the two social apps share something so essential that it has changed them from friends to foes: For their services to flourish, they both need celebs.

Or, as social networks like to call them, influential users -- and the battle for them is critical as both Instagram and Twitter try to turn their popular apps into money-, ad-filled playgrounds.

The side-by-side rise of Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tumblr, WhatsApp, and others, all while Facebook has continued to grow in size and attention, attest that variety can be the spice of our social lives.

People jump in and out of apps all the time, Brian Blau, a Gartner analyst, said. They can be Instagram users and Twitter users and be full participants in both of those kinds of conversations. So I dont think that one excludes the other.

As Instagram gets bigger, Twitters pitch about being one-of-a-kind lls flat. Twitter has already said theres a pSocial Networking Why Twitters most important asset is at riskroblem.

That Instagram is growing at a ster clip isnt on its a ce a huge problem for Twitter. In the world of social apps, people dont have to pick just one.

Jennifer Van GroveJennifer Van Grove covers the social beat for CNET. She loves Boo the dog, CrossFit, and eating vegan. Her jokes are often in poor taste, but her articles are not.

Accounts such as these lure people back for more 140-character bits. They are the essence of Twitter, a key reason to visit it at all. But of equal importance is what you reveal when you connect to them, or they to you. Herein lies the special sauce that makes Twitter of value to advertisers: the Interest Graph.

Now at 150 million active users, the 3-year-old photo-sharing app is quickly closing in on Twitters 218 million active users. Instagram grew 66 percent between January and September, adding 60 million active users in that time. Thats more than twice as much as Twitter grew in the nine-month period between September 2012 and June 2013.

Twitter is loved by mous people -- something its counting on to keep driving its business as an unsuspecting rival grows up.

Or as Blau put it, To some degree, Twitter and social is a big grand experiment.

This is where Instagram comes in. Its a ster-growing social app, has a follower model akin to Twitters, new york asian escort and counts many celebrities and other influencers as users. Its owner, Facebook, also has a war chest of data linked to peoples real identities, all of which could lead to a more interesting Interest Graph for advertisers.

Real time is also Twitters game to lose. Though Facebook and Instagram love to remind us how relevant they are to current afirs and breaking news, Twitter, at least when it comes to perception, has cornered the market for now. But exactly how big the market is for letting advertisers ride the wave of public chatter is a variable unknown.

The graph is valuable to advertisers, which, ultimately, will determine how well Twitter does as a stock. Twitter, like Facebook, is an ad business; 87 percent of its revenue came from advertising in the first half of 2013.

Thats its map of all the people, connections, and interactions on Twitter. In official, investor-speak, Twitters Interest Graph, previously referred to as its follow graph,Social Networking maps, among other things, interests based on users followed and actions taken on our platform, such as tweets created and engagement with tweets, according to the S-1.

This issue isnt audience -- until advertising comes into play. Instagram is set to turn on ads for US users in the coming weeks, in the form of sponsored photo and video updates to the home feed. Twitter and Instagram will be battle for advertising dollars, Blau said.

Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest -- heck, even Viddy -- have influencers. But Twitter deems itself top dog with this bunch. The public, real-time nature, and tremendous global reach of our platform make it the content distribution platform of choice for many of the worlds most influential individuals and organizations, Twitter said in its S-1, filed earlier this month with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A bigger, ad-supported Instagram threatens to erode the value of Twitters greatest asset.

How well a person or brand can distribute information and attract newcomers -- the most important kinds of influence to Twitter -- matters. Twitter surely measures and monitors such things closely. We know the company maintains an internal metric for scoring member influence, something co-founder, largest shareholder, and former CEO Evan Williams revealed back in 2010.

If theres one area where Twitter may have partial immunity, its in the TV arena. Twitter has been pushing with all its might to deepen its link to television. It recently kicked off remote-control tie-ins with Comcast and an ad-sharing deal with the NFL. The Comcast deal in particular gives Twitter a way to stand out with broadcasters and media companies wanting data on how influencers directly affect tune-in.

We understand that theres great value associated with Twitters follow graph data. Thats what Twitter said last July when it crippled Instagrams ability to let members find and follow their Twitter friends on Instagram. Twitter was so afraid of handing over its relationships, its graph, to a rival that it took what was perceived at the time as a pretty drastic action.

As Twitter said: We believe a users Interest Graph produces a clear and real-time signal of a users interests, greatly enhancing the relevance of the ads we can display for users and enhancing our targeting capabilities for advertisers.

.

This sort of technology does not come cheap. A unit feeding basic data back to the service, with a fixed camera, starts at $2,000. The advanced units, with more inputs and cameras that can be remotely controlled, are closer to $10,000. Thankfully this hardware is largely standardized in Japan, relying on inteces put forth by the Ubiquitous Environment Control System Consortium (UECS). So, youre not on the hook to buy proprietary Fujitsu devices. However, the company certainly hopes youll use the Akisai service to aggregate all the data Social Networking Inside Fujitsus cloud-powered rm of the futurecoming from those sensors. That, too, will cost you, starting at 6,000 JPY per user per month (about $60).

That may seem like attire ill-suited for either fording pastures or exploring barns, and indeed it is, but then this isnt your average rm. This is a special project, something of a testbed for a service called the Akisai Food and Agriculture Cloud. Its a suite of cloud-based software services put together by Fujitsu to help Japanese rmers achieve what every business craves: productivity.

At this cility, however, the Akisai rm is growing something Fujitsu calls senjusai. We step inside to see the proceedings, kicking off our shoes and squeezing into slippers never intended for American feet. The leafy red senjusai plants sit on tables, plugged into holes in polystyrine sheets that float over a trickle of nutrient-rich water. Black and white 2D indicators, like QR codes, mark the tables.

The Web form displays current temperatures both inside and out the greenhouses, as well as humidity, wind speed, and sun intensity. Soil moisture content is tracked along with rainll amounts and, if that werent enough, with a few clicks, Fukaya-san is able to modulate the temperature and humidity within the greenhouse by remotely controlling ns, vents, and heaters. He can even pull up a live feed of video from multiple cameras in the fields, it easy to find out which unit of una is nibbling on which bit of flora.

Ranchers arent left out of the party, either. When paired with a series of cow pedometers (yes, pedometers for cows), Akisai can generate reports on a given heifers activity. An active cow is a more fertile cow, and by tracking activity you can determine the perfect time for breeding. Fujitsu numbers show this tracking has increased fertilization success by more than 30 percent. On the flip side, if a given cow is particularly inactive, it may be time to call the vet. Im left wondering whether FitBit is aware of this relatively untapped market.

Tim StevensTim Stevens got his start writing professionally while still in school in the mid 90s, and since then has covered topics ranging from business process management to videogame development. Currently he pursues interesting stories and interesting conversations in the technology and automotive spaces.

The Akisai intece

While an assistant serves us delicate glasses of iced green tea, Fukaya-san opens up his (Fujitsu) laptop, connects it to a projector, and logs into the Akisai service. Im initially struck by how it is, and I cant help wondering whether Ive made a horrible mistake coming all this way into the country to see a demonstration of a service that has all the visual sophistication and charm of the Northwind Traders demo Web app that shipped with Microsoft Access 2000.

Those are r from the only hints that this isnt a typical greenhouse. The back wall is lined with beige boxes containing electrical and communications equipment. Sensors monitor whats going on within the greenhouses, while outside two devices aggregate information about their nearby fields, each with its own streaming camera. Both connect to a local wireless network and tethered to a power line, but could just as easily be phoning home over a cellular connection and relying on solar power.

Despite its status as a tech-crazed nation, Japanese rms tend to be irly . Farmers generally cant monitor output from one year to the next, and with no data, its difficult to make smart business decisions.

Presentation over, Fukaya-san takes me away from the wood paneling and out into a day that is starting to clear, exposing more of the view down into the bay. The Akisai installation on the ctory grounds is down a narrow road, up a little hill past a drainage pond to a clearing. Two small, white greenhouses sit on the r side of a field that covers little more than an acre.

Thinking back to the average rmer clearing just $15,000 a year, it all sounds particularly expensive. Prohibitively so. This, then, is why Fujitsu has been of late courting not rmers but government officials. In ct, the same day as my visit, local representatives were coming to get their own tour. Fujitsus hope is that these municipal bodies will decide that the service and related hardware is worth the investment, either renting or loaning it out to local rmers with the goal of fostering local agriculture. With a service whose goal is to make already tight margins slightly more comfortable, that certainly seems like the most practical financial solution. For the rmers, at least.

The scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile when the shuttle drops you off 30 minutes later. Ironically, Fujitu built the plant on rmland in 1976, occupying a space of land so dear to rmers that some still work the land between the buildings. The place was also intended to serve as a residential and recreation area for employees, which explains all the scenery. On a clearer day you can see down to the Suruga Bay and the Izu Peninsula, a popular place for the spa-loving Japanese to soak away their troubles in one of the hundreds of natural hot springs.

Fujitsu has repurposed a clean room, previously used for semiconductor b work, to grow low-potassium lettuce suitable for people suffering from kidney afflictions. Plants grown on the inside of the greenhouses are, predictably, prettier looking. At another location, Fujitsu has repurposed a clean room, previously used for semiconductor b work, to grow low-potassium lettuce suitable for people suffering from kidney afflictions. Fujitsu indicates that store-bought lettuce has a potassium content of up to 490mg per 100g. The special Fujitsu lettuce contains just 69mg. (Note that according to the USDA, iceberg lettuce has potassium content of 194mg.) The clean room is a perfect environment for it, with an accurately modulated climate and zero foreign contaminates.

Tour over, Fukaya-san takes me back to the wood-paneled confines of the board room for final discussions and something of a treat: glasses of juice from the senjusai plants grown in the smart greenhouse. The crimson extract is said to make you live longer, new york asian escort and Im not about to pass up a promise like that. Served cold and heavily spiced, the juice is a little like a particularly bitter glass of mulled cider over ice. I imagine this is how a red potion in The Legend of Zelda would taste.

The round table, the seats, the flags, the 60s stylings -- I cant help picturing JFK sitting at a table much like this during the Cuban missile crisis. Were here to talk about rming, though. SaaS-based rming with metrics, that is. Fukaya-san is a friendly man of about average height and build, dark hair beginning to thin. A pair of narrow, wire-framed reading glasses spend more time pushed up on his head than on his ce. A pen hangs, unprotected, in the chest pocket of his striped shirt as he tells me about the differences in Japanese and American rming.

Fujitsus Numazu Plant is northwest of a town called Mishima, which is itself about an hours ride from Tokyo via Shinkansen, whisking through gradually greener and increasingly elevated countryside at 170 mph. An employee shuttle picks up Fujitsu workers at the station and takes them the further 10 kilometers into the mountains, past forests of pagoda and katsura trees and plenty of bamboo, too.

This, then, is why Im visiting a rm at the Fujitsu Numazu Plant, a ctory that formerly manuctured mainframes but now spits out software and services designed to bring Japanese rmers into the information age. I cant help feeling a little underdressed. Having grown up in Vermont, I know that typical rm visiting dress entails blue jeans, a flannel shirt, and rubber boots. The taller, the better. I sadly packed neither flannel nor waders for my trip to Japan, sneakers and a T-shirt having to make do. My guide, Tomoaki Fukaya, is wearing suit pants, a dress shirt, and dress shoes. Hed surely be wearing a suit jacket and tie as well, were it not for Japans Cool Biz initiative, which discourages such adornments with the goal of reducing the need for power-hungry air conditioning.

The average Japanese rm, on the other hand, covers less than five acres. It raises only about $50,000 in revenue annually, which pays helpers and buys machinery, seeds, and other required supplies. At the end of the year, the average Japanese rmer clears just $15,000 of income to support a mily, which doesnt leave much for investments in heavy machinery or monolithic software suites to track crop yield or milk production.

I imagine this is how a red potion in The Legend of Zelda would taste. Whether the juice adds years to my life remains to be seen, as does Akisais ability to help rmers increase the longevity of their businesses. After a quick glimpse into what can be done, its hard to imagine anyone in agriculture not wanting the kind of easy, direct access to data that a service like this can pull together. The only question is whether those who need this the most can afford it. As weve seen in nearly every other industry, it may soon be a question of whether they can afford not to.

Small plots containing various bits of vegetation are scattered about. I can smell some radishes somewhere, but the main vegetables of interest here on the outside are eggplants, cabbage, and sweet potatoes. A few bushes of red and green chili peppers add some color to the surroundings. Some of the vegetation looks a little worse for wear, leaves perforated by pests. Fukaya-san apologizes for their appearance, proudly stating that no pesticides are used at this Akisai rm. Not to worry, I say. These days Americans pay extra for distressed vegetables at rmers markets.

The average rm in the United States of America is 449 acres. Ignore the smaller rms on the East Coast and look to an agriculture-focused state like Wyoming, and that average footprint balloons to a whopping 3,743 acres -- one-fourth the size of the island of Manhattan. Thats a lot of land, enough that rmers can make big investments and expect big payoffs. An expensive tractor will pay for itself by tilling, haying, and managing more acreage. The same goes for less predictable but equally important rm equipment,Social Networking like computers running accounting software. Modern megarms in America are often sophisticated, data-driven enterprises employing dozens or hundreds of people.

Japanese rms are smaller and often less sophisticated than those elsewhere in the world. Can a suite of sensors, services, and -- yes -- cow pedometers from Fujitsu help them compete on a global scale?

Up on the hill, in the Fujitsu offices, things are rather more professional. Im lead past a secure door into a cramped elevator, and then down a dark, quiet, windowless hallway into a large (for Japan) wood-paneled meeting room. An oval table and a dozen low, black leather chairs take up virtually all the floor space. A small American flag on a small metal flagpole designates my seat for the discussion. Across from me, a Japanese flag marks the seat of Fukaya-san, who is senior manager of the Innovative Business Development Unit, Social Cloud Business Div. The round table, the seats, the flags, the 60s stylings -- I cant help picturing JFK sitting at a table much like this during the Cuban missile crisis.

A new rumor and details point to the Nexus watch potentially coming this year. The HTC One Max is officially here and our Hot List for the top Android phones.

But, as Solo said, shes got it where it counts. Fukaya-san drills deeper and deeper into the service. He shows how rmers can track the hours worked and output produced by their helpers. He shows how to define pastures on Google Maps and then chart their contents and yield. He pulls up bar graphs showing average worker task duration and line charts of historic weather conditions. And, as a final act, a real-time feed of data streaming from the Akisai test rm, a combination of greenhouses and pastures that happens to be a kilometer away. It could have just as easily been on another continent.

Our goal with Spark Camera was to develop an iPhone app that would make it fun and easy to create high-quality, high-impact, sharable videos, Ideos Toy Lab wrote in a statement. Throughout the development process, we took our inspiration from iPhone users. Our observations of their habits and preferences led to several key insights, which we addressed in Spark Cameras final design.

Developed to make video recordings more intuitive and fun, the app lets users edit together various scenes with music and filters.

A new project the firm has been working on is an iPhone video app called Spark Camera. While there are already tons of video apps out there -- like Viddy, 8mm, and not to mention social media apps like Snapchat and Instagram that feature video -- Ideos app is a bit different.

The Fitbit Forces combo of fitness tracking and watch capabilities are compelling.

A new rumor and details point to the Nexus watch potentially coming this year. The HTC One Max is officially here and our Hot List for the top Android phones.

My wrist has only so much room, and the Fitbit Force has won the shoving match against the mighty Galaxy Gear.

I had high hopes for Sonys first smartwatch.

My freaky wrist gear fetish

When Samsung officially gave birth to the Galaxy Gear I practically vibrated with excitement and anticipation. And when the company was kind enough to drop one of its latest gizmos into my eager hands, along with the excellent Note 3, I was overjoyed. I should have known better, though. My history with the nascent smartwatch product category (wrist-borne devices that tell time and talk to smartphones) has been a rocky one.

The Galaxy Gear, however, is another story entirely, which makes it all the more tragic a tale to tell. Its practically a microcomputer attached to your arm. Running a modified version of Android driven by an 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM, it has the chops to run full Android apps. The Gear is a well-crafted hunk of mobile hardware, too, with a bright OLED screen and metal construction.

Thats why I was beside myself with shock when I decided to put down the robust Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch in vor of Fitbits new Force fitness tracker. I know its no true smartwatch, but the Force efficiently doubles as both powerful health device and futuristic timepiece.

Now enter the Fitbit Force Social Media, which for $129.95 is sleek, small, light, and functional as an advanced pedometer and fitness tracker. It also can log your sleep, sync via Bluetooth with iPhones and select Samsung handsets, and connect users to the vast analytical tools Fitbit has built online.

Both the Motorola Motoactv and Sony Smartwatch had lots of potential but didnt quite deliver, whether in terms of design, functionality, or runtime. That said, they came a heck of a lot closer to being devices Id actually use regularly than other clunkers Ive seen. I mean the Metawatch and Im Watch are particularly flaming trainwrecks (sorry guys, new york asian escort model nothing personal) I wouldnt inflict on my despised enemies.

Next throw in its bright OLED screen, which displays the time and allows the Force to function as a watch, and you begin to see its strong appeal. The Force is water-resistant, too, so jumping into the shower with it or wearing the gizmo in a tropical downpour wont give you extra stress. I also prefer committing to something that can run for 7 to 10 days as opposed to the Gears short 24-hour battery life. The Forces promised caller notifications (on iOS only) are icing on the cake. Lets hope these capabilities will extend to Android phones once KitKat comes calling.

The watchs 24-hour battery life, while longer than say the Sony Smartwatchs running time of 6 to 8 hours, still means youll need to charge it every day or so. Lastly, the ct that the Gear works with just one phone, the Note 3, is the final straw. Frankly I find the whole Gear situation a sad state of afirs, because I really wanted to like this device and I still believe it has tons of potential.

Ive had a love afir with high-tech watches for as long as I can remember. I still recall with fondness my beloved Casio Marlin W-300, which I cherished as a tot. Ive also proudly worn some truly laughable devices out in public, much to my friends annoyance and eventual entertainment. Remember the Pimp series from Tokyo Flash? On second thought, perhaps its better that you dont.

A force I cant resist

Of course this doesnt mean that I wont be tempted to grab the Galaxy Gear and strap it on in the future. Far from it. If Samsung, or more likely the clever hacking community, bestows on the Gear the gift of universal Android support (regardless of phone maker) and support for real notifications (from your app of choice), well, count me back in.

Sadly, despite its power, the Gear ils utterly at what a general-purpose smartwatch is supposed to do. That primary task being to screen all your digital communication so you touch your phone less. With no way to see at a glance the contents of e-mail and social-media alerts, arguably the bulk of what most people grab their handsets for in the first place, the Gear essentially becomes a geeky and expensive $300 conversation piece.

The Fitbit Force leaps to the top of the fitness tracker heap, with a bright screen, comfortable fit, and aWhy I ditched the Galaxy Gear for the Fitbit Force Social Media bevy of slick features. Read Full Review
