It does entirely depend upon how you look at it. There should not be any reason for radical opinions on this topic. First hand interaction is important, but so is engaging in social media. It is just as dangerous, if not more, to approach a stranger ce to ce. If the stranger asked you to come with him to his house, the logical answer would be no. The internet is the same, and it takes a responsible parent to teach a child to react responsibly to both circumstances. Going from a class environment where everything is printed or handed in to classes that are almost completely digital was a struggle. Times are changing and it is necessary to have these skills. The dangers do exist, but dangers always exist. Prohibiting children from this knowledge of technology or responsibility through technology could be detrimental for their future education. It is definitely something to think about before claiming a point, because both sides have merit.
