Im going to be doing a pretty big push for Social Media Is BS in August and September to correspond with the books one-year anniversary (One year later, Im still right), but if you havent yet read the book, I hope you will do so. Right now Amazon has the best deals for the book, so if youre looking for a cheap way to check out the book and help make The New Frontier happen, buy aSocSocial Media Is BSial Media copy and share it with your friends.

That is the choice our nation must make a choice that lies not merely between two men or two parties, but between the public interest and private comfort, between national greatness and national decline, between the fresh air of progress and the stale, dank atmosphere of normalcy, between dedication and mediocrity. All mankind waits upon our decision. A whole world looks to see what we shall do. And we cannot il that trust. And we cannot il to try.
So the second book, which isnt exactly a sequel because its very different in a lot of ways from Social Media Is BS, Social Media, takes a different approach. Instead of speaking to everyone about that choice between dedication and mediocrity (to put it in Kennedys words), Im now speaking directly to the people who have chosen dedication. You WANT to succeed using this stuff, you have the data, the plan, and you know the parameters in which youre working. Now you want to know what the next step is and how to do it. So the new book walks you through everything step by step.
So whatever the new book is actually called, well call it The New Frontier for now, sets out to do just that.
The New Frontier will almost likely NOT be the name of the actual book. Soap Box Included was the production name used for Social Media Is BS throughout 2009 and 2010. The name of that book didnt come until much later, and if the NYT and WSJ folks who have complained to me about the title are any indication, I probably should have stuck with Soap Box Included.
But thats not the part of the New Frontier speech that appeals to me, or is relevant to what the new book is actually about. The part of the speech that ties into the new book is actually this:
So, Im working on a new book. The proposal is about 90% done (I just need to bang out a couple of sample chapters), and Ive given the book the production name of The New Frontier.
Think about what I was really saying with Social Media Is BS: The issue isnt the tools and platforms. It says that right on the back cover. Your use, and success and ilure using those platforms, comes down to your data, your set of circumstances, and your plan of action. Its the hucksters peddling these social media marketing myths that I have a problem with because theyre leading people astray with BS. So theres a choice thats inherent in what Im proposing in the first book. You can choose to save your money, invest it wisely, and plan accordingly in using these different Internet platforms to promote whatever it is you are promoting, new york asian escort model or you can buy the hype and il miserably. You can choose between the fresh air of progress or the stale, dank atmosphere of normalacy, between dedication and mediocrity. Or better still: Between the iled breast cancer awareness tour, which was built entirely around social media marketing tactics peddled by the big social media marketers, or the r more successful A Million High Fives / High Five Tour which was built on good old-shioned publicity and PR stunts.

Ah well. What are you going to do?
I have a pretty good shot at getting the sequel published regardless of how the first one did (see: National media blackout and the likelihood it wont happen again), but every little bit helps. So if youd like to improve the odds from pretty good to sure bet, you know what to do.
Most of us, unfortunately, have chosen mediocrity and the breast cancer tour. I did for a long time, which is why Social Media Is BS exists in the first place.
If youre not miliar with the phrase The New Frontier, its pulled from President John F. Kennedys acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention. A lot of people, when referencing the speech, like to use this particular passage:
Now, there are some things you can do to help in this process. As mentioned elsewhere, Social Media Is BS did well, but it also didnt do great. It did well enough to give me a chance to spin the wheel again with publishers (translated into three languages, sold almost 8,000 copies in spite of a national media blackout and no financial resources to market it), but it also didnt sell out its first print run. Thats not great Bob:
[W]e stand today on the edge of a New Frontier - the frontier of 1960s, the frontier of unknown opportunities and perils, the frontier of unfilled hopes and unfilled dreams. Beyond that frontier are uncharted areas of science and space, unsolved problems of peace and war, unconquered problems of ignorance and prejudice, unanswered questions of poverty and surplus.
Ive been consistently saying since 2010 that there are two ways to fight the social media hucksters and their friends in the marketing and PR world. You can embarrass and humiliate them, which Ive done, and you can give away all of their tips and tricks in such a way that renders their existence obsolete. I havent done the latter.
